One Size Fits All?

Apple Announces Revolutionary New MacBook

Apple announced their new MacBook model on March 9th and whether you are a Mac or a PC, it is certainly a game changer. Only the future will tell whether it’s a positive or negative change. Apple decided to forgo the usual ports in favor of a single USB-C port that functions as a one-size-fits-all solution.

Apple is Putting Their Money on USB-C

The new USB port is to become an industry standard and simultaneously functions as a charging, video and data port. While some may laud the elegant simplicity of the design, others—including die hard Mac purists—will certainly be at a loss over their loss of ports. The notebook gets an impressive 9 hours of battery life on wireless web, but when that runs out, how do you connect to a monitor AND charge? And what if you also need to use your USB port for, you know, transferring data? Apple is hoping you will do a lot of this sort of thing wirelessly, and they will sell an adapter for when you need to plug in multiple devices. However, they will still likely have a lot of questions and user scenarios that they’ll need to address come release. Still, now that Apple has made this step in favor of USB-C, we will likely be seeing a new wave of competitors and peripherals hitting the market. It will be exciting to see how this new standard serves to change and evolve technology and design.
