Xdesk & The Environment

Sustainable, Environmentally Friendly Materials

Friendly Materials

XDesk designers and engineers have pioneered the development of environmentally friendly product materials. It's what Xdesk doesn't have that makes it so environmentally friendly. In homes, the most significant source of formaldehyde are pressed wood products made using adhesives that contain urea-formaldehyde resins. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and is associated with brain and nasal cancers. Designing greener products means evaluating the environmental impact of the materials used to make them.

Toxic Substances Removed

The greatest environmental challenge facing the desk and furniture industry today is the presence of formaldehyde. The vast majority of desks, including adjustable height desks, use pressed-wood products, laminate, veneer or MDF. Although most countries still allow use of these substances, we have eliminated them from our products.

Not only is every product we sell free of formaldehyde and other harmful toxins, we have also eliminated the use of solvent-based paints, putting Xdesk years ahead of anyone else in the industry. Xdesk is committed to ensuring that both our customers and our workers are safe. US based design and assembly allows for tight control and monitoring of how Xdesk is manufactured.

Recycled and Natural Sustainable Materials

Xdesk uses natural, sustainable and recycled materials when possible. Recycled aluminum was chosen for strength and beauty. Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust. Chosen for all of Xdesks' frames and also the top surface of the Xdesk Air, recycled aluminum is highly sustainable. And recycled aluminum is of equal quality as new aluminum. Aluminum has an amazing lifecycle. Consider this: over two-thirds of the aluminum ever produced is still in use today. The choice to use recycled aluminum just makes sense.

Recycling aluminum consumes 95 percent less energy than does producing new aluminum and that means lower production emissions. What's the perfect natural, beautiful, and sustainable material? Bamboo. It is the fastest growing woody plant on earth. Technically a grass, bamboo has been known to grow 39 inches in just 24 hours. A tree may take 30 years to re-grow. Thinning bamboo actually makes it healthier and up to 20% can be safely removed each year. The warmth and beauty of your Xdesk is certain to make an impact on you, and not the environment.

Goodbye Solvent Based Paints

Goodbye Solvent Based Paints

Sometimes it's the product's finish, not the product itself that is harmful. Choosing a product with a natural finish minimizes the environmental impact. Xdesk ships over 50% of its products with naturally finished aluminum. While some prefer natural beauty, sometimes we just need a little color. The easy way out would be to use solvent-based paints that contain volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Solvent-based paints that contain VOCs may cause watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, and in some cases even an asthma attack. To keep Xdesk clean and pure, an advanced technology called powder coating was chosen.
